An initiative to spread education and awareness among young children was undertaken by Asha Chinh in collaboration with Rotary Club in the form of Umeed School. 30 Children between the ages of 5 and 12 from nearby slums, who could not afford to study in schools or travel to government schools that were far away from where they lived came to Umeed in hope for brighter future. The school was built with minimal infrastructure with an aim to impress children with the importance of education, cultivate a habit of going to school, reading good books, maintaining hygiene and adopting healthy eating habits. Children were provided with school bags, uniforms, books and stationary. Regular health check - ups were organized and medical treatments were given in case of need.
The school adopted an innovative method of teaching. Umeed was no regular school , it was a preamble to schooling. Children learnt basic subjects, physical exercises, enjoyed different extra - curricular activities. Celebration of birthdays and festivals made it feel like second home to the children.
